Chemise is a single-piece garment that will hang from the shoulder upto the thighs and a few upto the knees. Usually, chemise is loose around the waistline making it a comfortable to wear garment.
Traditionally, chemise was used
as an undergarment and was worn below the main outfit. It is designed in such a way as to cover from the top of
the shoulder down to the thighs just above the knees. In most cases, a chemise is a
sleeveless outfit that is made of cotton or other comfortable fabric. For long
periods in history, chemise was used as a sleepwear and women never showed up
in a chemise outside their home. Chemise was never a garment used as fashion
wear or some sort of a stylish outfit until the last 50 years since its
inception.
We have historical evidence of chemise being used by women as an undergarment even during the eighteenth century. It was used by women to keep sweat and other body oils from staining the outer garments. It is interesting to note that even men used to wear chemise over their trousers and used robes to ensure it fit their bodies comfortably.
Today chemises are sold as a readymade garment in every fashion store in various designs, finishes, sizes and shapes to ensure it is being used as style wear. And thus it made its way into every woman’s wardrobe. Today chemises are worn as innerwear, outerwear and also as sleepwear. Today chemises have also sneaked its way into sexy lingerie category.
Chemises
have evolved from being a simple garment into becoming an important aspect of
women's lingerie that makes a woman feel sexy and
beautiful. Chemises are available in a variety of fabrics such as
cotton, silk, satin, crushed velvet, silk, lace, and mesh. Chemises are also
available in various lengths from thigh to knee to ankle. So, the wearer can
choose the length that is right for her.
Today chemises are worn by women as business wear, where they use a coat over the chemise to get that perfect look. It gives them a more feminine look in a professional setting.
Chemise
remains popular even after 300 years after it was introduced into the lingerie
and clothing bandwagon. Since a woman’s love for beauty and luxury will never
go out of fashion, chemises will always remain in fashion and continue to
inspire women to try chemises.
